MONDAY MUSINGS: TAKE A TRIP DOWNTOWN WITH CALVIN KLEIN AND ROONEY MARA

WERE you one of the many thousands who read Stieg LarssonThe Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy? I did and loved them. I loved his writing style, but really enjoyed the dark and androgynous computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. 



However, we know that when Hollywood remakes/reworks some projects, things can change – and not always for the better. But in the case of the first instalment of the The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, it didnt. The casting of Rooney Mara as the female lead was perfect. Her compelling portrayal of the biker-chick, downtown-girl Salander was so believable. (She even had her eyebrow, nose, lip and nipple pierced for the role!)  So you could be forgiven for thinking that Mara could be anyone else. That the idea of her wearing a girly dress, pretty colour or even smiling would be so foreign. Yes? 

But smile she does! Mara, who shot to fame for that memorable performance, is the new face of Calvin Kleins latest perfume offering, Downtown. Quite fitting really. In another great casting coup, Mara is the leather jacket-wearing, dark and moody downtown girl in the new 60-second black and white TV commercial (below). But unlike Lisbeth Salander, Mara offers up the smallest of smiles – and a laugh. The girl smiles! Who knew she was capable of it? 



The new TV campaign – Maras first beauty gig  is shot by David Fincher – who previously directed her in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network, but is also notable for Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and most recently the hit US TV series Houses of Cards (in which, coincidentally, he directed Rooneys sister Kate Mara). Perhaps the familiarity made Rooney comfortable enough to open up and let loose, or maybe shes just had it in her all along

Either way, it's a relief to see. Behold, Rooney Mara looking happy.

And if youre into cinematography, it's the ad also that sparked the creation of Reds Monochrome Epic camera last year.

As for the perfume … well I havent smelt it. But the press sources suggests it is a floral woody with notes of Italian lemon, bergamot, Tunisian neroli, green pear and aquatic plum. The heart incorporates gardenia, pink pepper and violet on a base of cedar, vetiver and musk. 

Sounds heavenly! Just have to go downtown to try it now!
