If you could only scratch and smell ...
I'M no art critic nor am I a collector of art by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what I like. And just like beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder.
I love hauntingly beautiful black and white photography, and those colourful old vintage posters advertising Campari, Bally and Cinzano – you know the ones I mean? I also love fashion illustrations – particularly those by renowned Italian fashion illustrator, Rene Gruau (best known for his haute couture work during the ’40s and ’50s), but more recently those by the wonderfully talented David Downton.
Regardless I do have an appreciation for many other forms and styles of art. And if I was ever going to take the plunge and buy some real art, I have a girlfriend who owns MARS (Melbourne Art Rooms) in South Melbourne – an art gallery for modern and emerging artists – whom I would consult before making any kind of serious purchase. Well, art is an investment after all!
However, over the years I have received – and kept (some of you might argue that technically I collected them!) – some beautiful cards, mainly invitations or festive cards. Cards from clients such as Chanel, YSL, Laurent Perrier, Gucci, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Pommery and others too many to list. These are not your average kind of gift card, they are mini works of art … and with the budgets some luxury houses have to spend, they should be sending out beautiful cards! Anyway, my plan is to have these cards mounted and framed – one day! I’ve had a few done already, but there are still quite a few more to go! One day I plan to hang them all together … Somewhere on a big wall ...
So when I happened upon these wonderful digital collages, Floral Alchemy by Sixto-Juan Zavala I had one of those “wow” moments. The American graphic designer and illustrator was commissioned by Cedar Communications for Highlife Shop Magazine, the onboard shopping magazine for British Airways, and the content in each image represents the notes in the perfumes. They’re absolutely beautiful! Then I wondered if you could buy them anywhere? Maybe they might be available in limited edition numbers? Or maybe the luxury brands could use them as Christmas cards? I know if I received one, it would certainly meet with my discerning taste and approval for keeping … or collecting. I would definitely consider hanging one on my wall!
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. They look so good; if you could only scratch and smell!
This Chanel No. 5 collage, also by Sixto-Juan Zavala, was not part of the
original Highlife Shop Magazine series. However, it was for a Chanel No. 5
advertising campaign that ultimately won Zavala several art awards.
Are you a fan of fashion illustrations? Do you love these as well?
Do you have a favourite perfume you would love to see as an illustration?
Let me know what you think. Would love to hear from you.
