ITS been a long road, but Zimmermann finally made its official debut at New York Fashion Week.

Joining other antipodeans – sass&bide, Dion Lee and Karen Walker (who incidentally showed for the 15th time) – the Zimmermann sisters held their first runway show at the Lincoln Center, ground zero for NYFW.

Although best known for their couture-worthy swimwear, Zimmermanns progression into mainstream fashion has been a slow but well-managed transition.  The new darlings of the New York fashion cognosenti opened their first flagship store in Mercer St, SoHo last year. It proved so popular they outgrew the space and are now heading to larger stumps further down the block later this month. So things are looking up.

The Zimmermann spring collection, titled The Ringmaster, was described as walking a tightrope between the whimsy of an age-old art and the dominant sophistication of an entirely modern attitude.

It was romantic and feminine, but strong in design. There were ruffles aplenty and floating asymmetric hemlines in gorgeous diaphanous fabrics such as silk chiffons and organzas. Abstract prints and artful cut-outs were juxtaposed with leather and lace.

The feminine touch continued with a colour palette of champagne, blush and silver tones. But there was also some black and white, in keeping with a continuing trend.

And even their signature swimwear made a guest appearance! Bravo!
