HOW TO BE THE FUCHSIA OF FASHION

Make like Elsa Schiaparelli, the iconic 1930s designer who loved to wear a shade of shocking pink

DOES the thought of yet another winter wearing black, black and more black depress you? Is your wardrobe sinking into a bermuda triangle of black? Or are you just bored with wearing black?

If your answers were yes, yes and yes, then its time to switch it up a notch or three. Its time to think pink!

In the pink, pretty in pink, the power of pink, pink persuasion, pink power … all these cliches conjure up images of fun and playfulness. And in a season of typically dark-muted tones, fuchsia or magenta are like a breath of fresh air!

These wonderfully rich tones — usually reserved for spring and summer — promise to brighten any dark, cold winter day. But embracing a new colour is always a challenge, however I encourage you to try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

It was only a few years ago that I inherited my mother’60s watermelon pink knit suit – a colour that wasn't even on my radar. But I was amazed at how the colour looked on me, how it worked against my fair skin and the number of people who commented at how well I looked! (Clearly, as a reflection of the colour!!!) So the blue-based hues of fuchsia and magenta will work a treat for me!

When worn with the cool, dark tones of black, grey and navy, pink looks sophisticated and safe. But, if youre like me and are looking to shake up your wardrobe a tad, mix back with red, orange, cobalt blue or green. But too much fuchsia can be overwhelming. Keep it simple and use as an accent colour only.

Dont wait until spring to indulge in this wonderful colour. What every woman needs is to think pink now! However, if pink is not your thing, maybe you're feeling blue instead.

STYLE TIP:
  • Play it safe and sophisticated; wear with black, grey or navy
  • Or turn up the heat and team with red or orange
  • Dont wear fuchsia head to toe. Use as a highlight colour only – either a statement coat, shoes, shirt, dress, skirt or pants
  • Alternatively have fun with some accessories
  • Know what shade of pink works best with your skin tone.
